An early Mother's Day present

May 8, 2009
For Mother's Day, Jeff took me to Western Garden Center to pick out any flowers I wanted for the flowerbed by the driveway. It's been a neglected part of our yard ever since we cut down a big cherry tree there, almost 4 years ago. Going to the nursery is about the only place we can both go shopping together, without me leaving in tears and Jeff fuming so we always have a great time, and usually spend way too much! Luckily, Jeff can grow anything and by next year, we'll probably have to split most of the flowers we planted because they'll be huge. Pearl had fun helping us plant, or shall we say rearrange the flowers after I spent a good hour moving them back and forth into perfect position. It was pretty funny though because she found it fascinating to pick up as many flowers as she could and shuffle them around the driveway. She decided the herb garden would be better suited next to the daisies than in the actual garden and that the moss should be lined up next to each other instead of scattered around the flowerbed. After getting in trouble for dropping the poor cilantro, she decided it would be more fun (and less likely to get in trouble again) to climb on Jeff's back and play "kitty" by rubbing her face on him and saying "meow" over and over again! Between Pearl's goofing off and a surprise visit from the Chuy family (thanks for my new flat iron Libbey), we'll have to wait until tomorrow to finish.

Picnic

May 7, 2009
Pathetic I know, but tonight was the first time we have ever done a real picnic with Pearl, blanket and all. She thought it was fun to eat on a blanket in the backyard (and right in the middle of Jeff's lawn mowing I might add). Ok, so she was really just excited to dip the veggies, then suck the dip off of them, and put them back on her plate but isn't chips and veggie dip a nutritious meal? I was excited that I didn't have to cook anything (Jeff brought home boxed lunches from work) and I got to eat Pearl's cheesecake. And Jeff, well, I think he was more excited when the picnic was over and we got out of his lawn mowing path!

Blowin' in the wind

May 6, 2009
Remember when you were a kid and spent countless hours picking dandelions and, much to your parents' dismay, blowing their seeds all over the yard? Well, Pearl has figured out that these pesky weeds are pretty fun. I'm sure you would all be shocked to know that yes, our pristine lawn has some dandelions in it this year, but it sure has made for a few moments of tender reflections watching Pearl pick them and blow them all over the place. She is so fun to watch as she explores things and it truly makes you stop and think how beautiful this world is and how magical it must be for a child. Too bad Jeff sprayed the lawn tonight and the end of the dandelions is shortly to come.

Permanent

May 5, 2009
I really need to take a photography class because I thought I had a really cute picture of the tattoos but it was blurry (even after the camera flashed at me that it was in focus)! Urghhh. You'll have to just imagine the "mean" faces Jeff and Pearl pulled as they were showing off their new tattoos. I'm not sure who was more excited about the matching Spiderman tats, Jeff or Pearl. Jeff brought them home from work, some sort of Employee Appreciation Week with a superhero theme that he's been planning. Pearl thought it was a sticker - she is really into stickers, literally, on her feet, legs, my legs, my feet, the floor, chairs - and showed it to everyone at daycare. I'm just hoping Jeff didn't show his tattoo off to too many of his coworkers.

It keeps going and going and going....

Let me just clarify by saying I am extremely grateful that our car still runs, but secretly Jeff and I both hope it blows up someday (without us in it of course) or gets stolen. I thought today might just be its last day on earth when Pearl and I attempted to go home and nothing happened when I turned the ignition. Not even a click, flicker, or grind of an engine. I really thought the car was dead for good so I called Jeff to come and rescue us. We were able to jump the car and it ran just long enough for me to pull into Checker Auto Parts' parking lot, where it died again. So, one new battery later, it's back up and running. But not after a few cuss words from Jeff as he tried to get the old, corroded battery out and a new one in. Thinking back about it, I'm just surprised I didn't get in more trouble. Here I am snapping pictures for my blog of our broken down piece of junk car, all while Jeff is trying to fix it. No wonder he told me to just take the truck and pick up some dinner on the way home. At least Pearl enjoyed her time running around the greasy, actually disgusting (don't ever go into the bathrooms, just pee your pants instead), auto parts store.

Happy Un-birthday!

May 3, 2009
It didn't seem to matter to Pearl that it wasn't her birthday... she still wanted the first piece of cake. We celebrated Jeff's mom and our niece Cassie's 11th birthdays today with dinner and cake. Pearl was really excited to eat the candles, yes eat them, and dig into that sugary sweet dessert. She didn't even bother singing happy birthday to the birthday girls before taking her share of it.
