Curb Appeal Part 1

May 16, 2009
Our front yard has been somewhat neglected lately. We've spent most of our time, sweat, and money fixing up the backyard since we bought our house five years ago. But today, the hard work begins to "curb appeal" the front flower beds. Well, technically it started yesterday with me putting planting petunias in the flower pots on the front porch. I need to replant some of them, but that's a story for another day. We ripped out the cheap, black, plastic stuff that lined the front of the flower beds and started setting a new wall of pavers. Lucky for me a nice salesman at Lowe's saw me struggling to push the second load of them to the truck (with Pearl sitting on top of them) and offered to take them to help Jeff load them. Who knew a bunch of concrete blocks could be so expensive? And we didn't even buy as many as we knew we'd need, let alone the top blocks to finish it off!!! We didn't quite finish the first flower bed - one paver away only because we have to move the water pipes first - but it looks better already!

Delicious and nutritious?

We haven't been to the grocery store in a couple weeks and today it was fairly obvious that we were down to the bare minimum in the cupboards. I couldn't find anything that Pearl wanted to eat for breakfast besides yogurt, strawberry milk, and popcorn. Horrible mom I know, strawberry milk and popcorn aren't really a nutritious way to start the day but well, we didn't have a lot of options. Pearl didn't want the last two eggs and the cereal, bread, and bananas were all gone. Oh well, it was a fitting breakfast considering I let her watch a movie while I got ready for the day.

Just another day on the job

May 14, 2009
I'm not sure if Jeff was working hard or hardly working today. Although he was on the green with a couple of co-workers so I guess that makes it a business meeting, right?

Stellar

May 13, 2009
Somewhere beneath the piles of paper, articles yet to be read, lists and lists of to-do items, unanswered emails, random drawings by Pearl (on all my meeting notes ironically), pens I can't seem to find, and random phone numbers I can't remember why I wrote down, is a stellar performance review. Too bad with this economy it won't come with a raise.

It's just a flesh wound

May 12, 2009
Jeff is over our ward's athletic activities and has to go to all the softball and basketball games. Well, he really hates any church related sports, if you've ever played church ball there's no further explanation needed, and I think tonight just reiterated this feeling. We all ventured to our ward's softball game, Jeff on his bike and Pearl and I with the stroller, and when we got there the other team didn't have enough players to officially play. So Jeff said he would be catcher for the other team. Apparently being nice doesn't pay off. A kid in our own ward, who ironically is nicknamed "Lemuel" for some let's say annoying and inappropriate behaviors, got up to bat, Jeff thought to himself I'm going to get hit, and wham! Luckily I didn't see it happen, just heard a crash and saw Jeff fall to the ground holding his head. Yep, he got hit by a flying bat. I ran over there (realizing I had left Pearl on the bleachers alone) and saw Jeff sort of glazed over with blood streaming down his head and hands. Later he told me that he was trying hard to not swear, which is probably why he looked so dazed. Thankfully he just got a cut on his forehead and a headache and not worse, like getting hit in the eyes and having his glasses shatter all over his face. After cleaning up the blood and making sure he was ok, we walked home. As soon as we walked in the door the phone started ringing with everyone calling to see if Jeff was ok, if he needed someone to drive him to the emergency room, if we knew the ward would pay for any doctor's visits, and the best one, if "Lemuel" hit him on purpose. At least he got a good laugh from all the calls and teasing by his co-workers today that I finally let him have it! What I should have done was followed my prompting to take my camera to the game so I could have gotten a picture with all the blood, rather than my one shot with the old camera (the flash isn't as bright) I promised Jeff so as to not make his headache worse... he was a good sport about it.

Peonies

May 11, 2009
My peonies are days away from full bloom, and sadly days away from one good wind storm blowing them apart. They are such fun flowers even if they don't last very long. But the best part about peonies is how they remind me of my Grandma. My Grandma had a big clump of them dividing her yard from the neighbors and as kids we would "high jump" over them. The goal was always the same, clear the massive peonies without knocking the petals off. That was a dead give away to Grandpa that we'd jumped them and all his hard work was now laying on the ground. Grandma never got mad though. Even when I grew up and got married, I still couldn't resist the urge to jump over the peonies.
