My camera battery died on me today so you'll just have to imagine Pearl's first dip in the pool this summer. She was so excited to" go to the pool" (she thought we were going to the rec center) and put on her new blue polka dot swimming suit, with little ruffles on the butt. Jeff told Pearl he had a surprise for her before bedtime yesterday, which is when we discovered he had filled up the pool last night and covered so it would get warm for a swim this afternoon. She had a great time putting all her toys into it, crawling around on her hands and knees telling me she was a fishy, and then zipping down the slide when I finally was able to lug it over to the pool. We spent a good two hours outside "doing again" as Pearl says going up and down the slide, dumping buckets of water on the slide, and "watering the plants" (the grass). By the time we were done, Pearl was exhausted and all but a half inch of water was left in the pool.

We have a dozen or so new babies in the neighborhood... baby quail. Every year we look forward to counting how many babies there are and then trying to get a picture of them running through the yard. Quail don't fly much but they are super fast runners! The babies are the tiniest things I've ever seen and look like little balls of feathers. After several attempts to get a picture of the babies following their mama to the garden to feast on our lettuce and peas, with dad squawking at me, I saw something move in the grass by our cherry tree. I walked over, heard more squabbling from mama and papa, and noticed one of the babies had been left behind. I felt bad for the little thing because he kept trying to hide from me, even hopping up on the tree at one point, but I was so excited to get a picture that I kept chasing him. At one point he just sat down in the grass and tried to hide. If I hadn't been watching him so close, I would have never found him. I just hope he got home safe and sound. I wouldn't want to find a fluff of feathers tomorrow morning.

Pearl was quite the little helper tonight. Not only did she help Jeff give the truck a "bubble bath" (getting soaked in the process), but she also helped me plant our wheelbarrow. She was quite proud of her work after rearranging the lobellas and adding some dead flowers that I didn't get planted before the heat took its toll on them. But her most exciting addition was a bunch of morning glory I had just yanked out of the flower beds. I guess she figures that I can at least grow weeds.

Pardon the messy garage and ugly picture, but I thought it would be fun to have everyone guess what Pearl is getting for her birthday next week. I've been wanting to get her one for quite some time now and Jeff found a good deal on KSL.com so we splurged the $55 and picked it up tonight. Luckily, Pearl could care less what's underneath the blanket and hasn't snooped once. I'll give you three clues to see if someone can guess what it is.
Clue #1 - It's big. I have no idea where we are going to put it!
Clue #2 - I hope it satisfies Pearl's desire to help mom do the dishes.
Clue #3 - It came with a bag of accessories.
Can you figure it out?

I could have posted something picturesque like kite flying on the beach, Pearl and Ruby on the swings, or the Bear Lake landscape as a final goodbye to a wet and fun weekend. But no, I'm posting something that will probably offend someone, instigate inappropriate joking, and make for hushed giggles. Jeff decided he wanted a change of scenery for the drive home so we drove to Evanston and then down to Ogden before getting on the freeway and boy am I glad we came home this way. He must not have noticed the sign when we pulled over to get gas at a little country store in Woodruff and when he didn't laugh, I figured I must have read it wrong. I told him to drive past it again and as soon as he turned around we both started laughing! I even called my sister to tell her we had missed out on a chance to go to the Testicle Festival. She admitted that she was a bit jealous and told me I had to get a picture of it. Luckily for her, I keep my camera with me at all times!

The clouds disappeared long enough to make a run for the beach tonight. It was beautiful, a little chilly, but oh the sand between my toes did wonders to brighten my day! Even if those were the only things not covered in long sleeves, pants, or a sweatshirt.

When we decided to go to Bear Lake for the Memorial Day weekend, I didn't expect to see rain clouds. It was supposed to be scorching hot so I could lay around on the beach all weekend working on my tan. Instead we spent most of the time crammed into the two trailers fighting the cold, wind, and rain. Now I can live with an afternoon sprinkle - it gives you enough time to eat lunch - as is typical to Bear Lake weather, but an entire weekend? I was so bummed, not to mention freezing because I only packed one pair of pants and no warm clothes. So what better way to console yourself than with a famous Bear Lake raspberry shake? Jeff treated the entire family to shakes and for a few minutes I almost forgot about not getting to lay on the beach, that is until I heard the furnace kick on.
