It's a good thing Pearl and her friend Brielle get along so well (or maybe it's because Brielle's mom and I have known each other since the 3rd grade) because I'm pretty sure their friendship is based on a give and take sort of relationship. Well, let's be honest, more of a Pearl takes relationship. Brielle is a great sport to let Pearl wear her ballerina outfit (much to Jeff's horror when he saw this picture), eat her food (seriously, Pearl has stolen her dinner before and I'm pretty sure just assumes Brooke will feed her when we go over), wear her Disney Princess high heels, and as was the case tonight, "borrow" your necklace and spare tu-tu.

Since there was only two of us for dinner group this week, we decided to have a BBQ on our night to cook. I figured if we're cooking burgers what's the difference between making two or four of them? Pearl couldn't wait for her friend Brielle to come over and play - er I mean eat dinner with us. She peered out the front window yelling "Brielle" for about 20 minutes before our friends got here, then decided she needed to get Brielle a cup and plate to eat with. I'm so glad she has little friends and that these two get along! We only had one fight... resulting in two screaming, sand-covered two-year-olds fighting over the same pink shovel. While neither one of them ate much, they did have a blast stripping down (not sure what instigated that though) and having Creamies together, even swapping a couple of times. Thanks Adam, Brooke, Brielle, and baby Teja for the great time!

Lesson learned. Never, ever take your kid to the zoo on Labor Day! I'm not sure who was more excited me or Pearl... I mean Hogle Zoo has new baby tigers! But the stark realization that our fun day at the zoo wasn't going to happen sunk in pretty quick as I saw a line of cars parked on the street a mile from the zoo! I was pretty disappointed knowing there was no way we were getting in, let alone finding anywhere to park. At this point, Pearl was begging to see the zebras so I turned around and headed up to "This is the Place Heritage Park" where I figured I could distract her with some farm animals instead. We wandered up and down the streets looking for baby animals, which we eventually found and stood in line for 20 minutes for a 30 second pony ride. We found a huge sucker in the ZCMI store and then hopped on the train for a ride or two or three. I practically drug Pearl off it kicking and screaming. And then I made Pearl go back to the Samuel Jewkes Home for a picture. Samuel Jewkes was my great-great-great grandpa who lived in Fountain Green, Utah where he operated a sawmill in the mid 1860s. I tried explaining all this to Pearl who looked more confused than ever when I told her it was one of her grandpa Jewkes' houses. I could see the little wheels in her head turning and thinking "Yeah right, Mom...this looks nothing like my grandpa's house." I guess I wanted Pearl to gain an appreciation for her ancestors... at least someday she will thank me for this picture!

As I was getting Pearl ready for bed tonight, she randomly asked - rather begged - me to let her sleep in her "suitcase" (aka her sleeping bag) and the tent. Then she proceeded to jabber about camping and how she wanted Daddy to take her camping. I guess our trip to the Unitahs had a lasting impression on her. I wasn't too sure that Jeff would find the idea quite as intriguing as Pearl, but told her to go and ask her Dad anyway. Jeff was a bit surprised and I could tell he was trying to think of a good reason not to drag out the tent in the dark. But that little face was so excited and running around in anticipation of camping that we had to come up with something. So we decided instead of setting up the big tent in the dark, that we could convince Pearl we (well Jeff and Pearl) could camp inside in the little tent. It worked, and one potty break and a glass of chocolate milk later, those two are sound asleep in the backroom. Lucky me, I get the whole bed to myself tonight!!!

New shoes make you wana JUMP, JUMP!
Ok so my take on Kris Kross' song popular when I was in middle school doesn't sound so good... just be glad this blog thing doesn't come with sound. But with not one, not two, but three new pairs of shoes, Pearl was in the mood to JUMP, JUMP! With the stark realization that our kid keeps on growing, we stopped by the shoe store - much to Pearl's excitement - to find some new church shoes (check) and school shoes (or as Pearl calls these cute Nike, her "game" shoes - can you tell her Dad has prepped her for basketball season?)... oh ya and the bonus clearance sandals for next summer. Pearl was so excited about the shoes, that she refused to leave the store without them on. After all, when you get new shoes that make you run faster and jump higher than before, you just can't help yourself! I'm just glad she's actually keep them on all day.
